I am often asked which jewelry metal goes best with a person's skin tone. My official answer on this is to wear what you like. I personally wear both silver and gold jewelry despite the fact that my skin tone is warm. The more technical answer uses your skin tone to pair the metal. How do you figure out your skin tone? Look at the underside of your forearm at your wrist. If your skin tends towards pink, red or white and your veins are blue then your skin tone is cool. If your skin has yellow, green or gold undertones and your veins are green then your skin tone is warm. Ok, so you know your skin tone, now what? Cool skin tones should wear silver, platinum and white gold. Warm skin tones should wear metals such as gold, pewter, brass and copper. Skin tones are further broken down into color seasons, see my postcolor is the new black to determine what season you are. You can use your color season to further determine which stones should be in your jewelry, but that is like graduate level jewelry pairing and kind of excessive in my opinion. I would like to reiterate that while it is useful to know your skin tone and color season for choosing your basic color schemes, the ultimate decision on what you wear, including your jewelry choices, should be made based on things you like and that make you feel good.
